The 6-5 Manyara registered the best game of his young collegiate career making 11 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks as he prevented the Green Archers from completing a comeback from a 14-point deficit (57-43) entering the payoff period.

PBA Plans to Use TV Replays in Officiating

Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is ready to embrace technology in its bid to improve officiating next season.

Up for approval is the use of video review to verify a two-point or three-point shot for the entire game and resolve a contested out-of-bounds calls during the last two minutes of the game.

These and the other proposals will be discussed and deliberated upon when the PBA holds its annual planning session on September 19-22 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Tighter gun law pressed

Manila, Philippines — Alarmed by firearms-related crimes, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV filed a bill that aims to have a tighter gun control and stiffer penalties for unlawful possession and acquisition of firearms particularly by public officials whether in civilian or in military, police or law enforcement service.

In Senate Bill No. 13, or to be known as the Gun Control Act of 2010, Senator Trillanes asked Congress to pass his proposal to deter crimes related to loose firearms more effectively and ensure a more peaceful and orderly country.

PCG Hopes to Enhance Services, Personnel with Modernization Program

Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo has expressed optimism that the ongoing modernization program of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) would further enhance its services and focuses on the needs of the fast-developing shipping sector.

In his address at the Aboitiz Transport System (ATS) annual vessel officers' conference, Admiral Tamayo has assured that the maritime stakeholders would be kept up-to-date with the current PCG's major programs and the reforms introduced by Republic Act 9993, otherwise known as the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009.

British Airways Still Keen on Qantas Merger

LONDON/Melbourne, Sept. 9 (Reuters) – British Airways would be keen on reopening merger talks with Qantas Airways if Australia's top carrier was interested in reviving a deal that collapsed in 2008, according to BA's chief executive.

''We have done the work in our discussions with them (Qantas) two years ago and we know there is a strong case there. It is definitely something that would be interesting in the future if Qantas were like-minded,'' Willie Walsh told The Australian Financial Review in an interview.

More Pilots Needed for Cockpits as Asia Travel Boom Creates Shortage

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Qantas Airways Ltd. and Emirates Airline are awaiting deliveries of about 400 planes to capitalize on Asia’s rising prosperity. Finding pilots is the next job.

Boeing Co. expects the region’s carriers to be the biggest buyers of twin-aisle planes as travel grows in China and India, home to a combined 1.1 billion middle-class people. Asia-Pacific airlines will buy about 8,000 planes worth $1.2 trillion over the next 20 years, Airbus SAS said.

Airphil Express Launches Sulu Flights After Runway Upgrades

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Airport runway upgrades completed in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, and Jolo, Sulu, through a US-Philippines partnership has led to the establishment of new commercial flights between those provincial capitals and this city.

Airphil Express will fly a 77-seater Bombardier Q400 along the Zamboanga-Jolo route three times weekly beginning September 11, and along the Zamboanga-Bongao route four times weekly from September 10, with connecting flights to Manila and Davao, according to Maria Java, the airline’s vice president for marketing and media.
